3+4 things you probably didn’t know about me

Graced to be named by the genius Phil Baumann as the next casualty in the “7 Things About Me” meme, I unfurl:  3+4 things you probably didn’t know about me.

1. I’ve been on a bamboo raft in a cave only accessible by the Li River.

On a whim our  group gestured “yes,” and climbed out of our boat onto a bamboo raft.  The four of us sat in pairs sharing a torch (flashlight). The man paddled the raft away from the current and into the dark opening of the cave.  Swallows swooped in and out at the cave entrance and the light shone through the clear water to the cave floor about six feet below us. This was one adventure in China my friends and I will never forget (especially as one the girls  is unable to swim and was completely terrified).

2. I have a fear of “plausible heights.”

This is how I discribe my odd fear of heights.  I get slight vertigo when attempting rock climbing,  looking over cliffs,  climbing towers, and going down stairs that have a vanishing point or stairs that are slats and you can see through them.  But I have to fear of standing atop of the Empire State Building or riding up in a glass elevator.  I find that if it is of a height where,  if I should fall,  I would surely be dead on impact, I have no fear.  If it is a height where,  if I should fall,  I would surely survive but have broken bones,  be paralyzed,  or suffer brain damage, then I’m terribly afraid.  I figure this is how my rationale is trying to deal with my fear.  Hence,  a fear of “plausible heights;” if the heights can induce a plausibility of injury or pain, it frightens me.

3. I have no wisdom teeth.

And I will not ever have wisdom teeth – I thank my grandfather for that lovely bit of genetics.

4. I believe in God and I believe in science.

Some people think that could never go hand in hand or that whomever could believe both must be an irrational being without so much an ounce of practicality. Who could rationally believe in both?  I happily respond, “Hello, my name is Sarah.”

5.  I enjoy learning languages. Ni hao! わたしわサラです. Is est bonus disco. Wo ist das Bier? Ce soir. 20:30. Par le pont. No sé español.

The symbol represented by drawing or sound  and how it’s concept has changed over the years – it’s this stuff that fascinates me.  Did you know that some of French is just derrogatory Latin?  “Tete” (fr.  a Head) in Latin comes from “jug”?  Occupying Roman soldiers used slang and the locals learned the slang instead of the proper Latin.   Isn’t that fascinating?   Or how the Asian character, a straight-lined rectangled “a month,” evolved from a curvacious  lunar concept?  I’ve dabbled in German, Latin,  Madarin Chinese,  Japanese, and Spanish, have an educational grasp of French and am always confused by my native tongue,  English.

6. This is my sense of humor:

“Due to recent cutbacks,  the light at the end of the tunnel will be periodically turned off.  Thank you for your cooperation.” “What’s pink and fluffy? Pink fluff.  What’s blue and fluffy?  Pink fluff holding it’s breath.” Or most of my humor goes like this.

7. I like knee-high socks.

And I just got my hands on some scandalous looking “over the knee”/”thigh-high” socks.  Do I wear these fashionable socks with fashionable skirts?  Never.  I wear them to stay warm – it’s awfully cold in the northern USA.

And now I announce the next seven people for this meme:

  1. Plausible heights! That’s a good description. Also a good name for a band.

  2. Ha, I also like the “plausible heights” description; have not heard that before. Perfectly logical!

While I don’t think I share the same fear you describe, I still might have to borrow that phrase sometime…

  3. i am loving the light at the end of tunnel humour!
